As an example: The politics intern will conduct research and work closely with our politics writers. You’ll help us keep track of new polls and feed them into our forecast of the presidential election. And you’ll have the opportunity to pitch and write stories. You should be detail-oriented and have some reporting and research experience. You should also be familiar with electoral politics. If you can name every vice presidential candidate for the last few decades, you should apply.

The Richard J. Riordan Summer Intern Program at PPIC provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students interested in a public policy career to work in a policy research environment. These internships are particularly appropriate for students in programs in economics, public administration, public policy, sociology, political science, urban planning, demography, and related disciplines. Generally, strong statistical and computer skills are required. In selecting interns, we look for a demonstrated interest in public policy research, with coursework or work experience relevant to one of the posted internship projects. Excellence; fit with our mission and goals; and diversity of talents, backgrounds, and viewpoints are important elements of the selection process. Internship project descriptions were posted in late December, with an application deadline of February 9, 2018. The selection process concludes by late March. Internships are based in PPIC’s San Francisco and Sacramento offices and will last up to three months, ideally beginning June 4th. Compensation is $17.50 per hour.
